Tom Tompkins

Tom graduated with a degree in viola performance in 1980 from the University of Southern California. Upon graduation, he moved to Mexico to perform as principal violist with the Veracruz Symphony and as assistant principal with both the State of Mexico Orchestra (Toluca) and the Mexico City Philharmonic. After several exciting and fulfilling years in Mexico, Tom left Mexico to join the 1st International tour of Show Boat performing 203 shows throughout 14 European countries.

Since 1985, he has served as principal violist with the Boise Philharmonic and performed as violist with the Boise Philharmonic String Quartet. In addition, Tom has been a member of the Sun Valley Summer Symphony and the Cascade Summer Symphony (Bend, Oregon), and principal violist with both the Music From Bear Valley festival (Bear Valley, California), and Boise State University’s Summerfest. Tom has also performed with the Santa Barbara Symphony, the Eugene Philharmonic, the Las Vegas Philharmonic, the Nevada Symphony and the Federal Way Philharmonic in Seattle.

Tom has appeared as soloist with the Veracruz Symphony Orchestra, the Magic Valley Symphony (Twin Falls), the McCall Chamber Orchestra, the Treasure Valley Youth Symphony, the Boise High School Chamber Orchestra, and the Boise Philharmonic.

Teaching has also been an important part of Tom’s career. He has maintained a private teaching studio and has acted as adjunct professor for both Boise State University and Northwest Nazarene College.

There is another side to Tom’s musical experiences. He loves playing folk, rock, country, Irish and jazz. His recordings include: Providence: Ever Sense the Dawn - 1972; Anne Andersen - 1974 (Montreal, Canada); he was awarded a “Gold Album” for Justin Hayward / John Lodge (of the Moody Blues): Blue Jays - 1975; Justin Hayward: Songwriter - 1976; Onomatopoeia: Catch ‘n’ Release - 1995; Eileen Alana: The Celtic Connection - 2001; Sally Tibbs: In Motion - 2001; and Kevin Kirk: Magic Song Food - 2003 .

During the day, Tom is the Director of Facilities for the Esther Simplot Performing Arts Academy, responsible for the smooth running of the buildings, which are “home” to the Boise Philharmonic, Ballet Idaho and Opera Idaho.
